The Problem of Buddhism in Thailand in View of Somdet Phra Buddhaghosacharya (P.A. Payutto)

Abstract

Recently Thailand has seen interwoven problems concerning the Thai Buddhism.  This article aims at exploring problems of Buddhism analyzed, criticized and regarded from the view of Somdet Phra Buddhakosajarn (P.A. Payutto).  During the past 60 years, P.A. Payutto has witnessed a large number of problems of Buddhism in Thailand, and he has also been providing useful and practical advice, and possible solutions to many of the complicated problems.  Through the theory of Mitchel Foucault’s Discourse Analysis, the analysis of his publications and views towards problems of Buddhism in Thailand yields insightful results and discussion.  It reveals 1) several complex problems related to the patronage and hierarchical systems between Buddhism and the state or government in the Thai society, 2) conflicts of Buddhism in Thailand, and, 3) long-standing problems of superstitions in the Thai society.  Such problems are considered insoluble, inseparable and intricate since the problems of Buddhism in Thailand are structural problems: they are resulted from political, cultural or policy dimensions.  In addition, many of the problems and conflicts have long been accumulated; therefore, the real understanding of the problems of Buddhism in Thailand must be promoted in pursuit of sustainable and right solutions
