Relationship between Social Environment and Sexual Risk Behavior among High School Students in Songkhla Province

Abstract

          The objective of this research was to study sexual risk behavior, the relationship between social environment and sexual risk behavior among high school students in Songkhla Province and the way to prevent the problem of sexual risk behavior among students. Data collection was carried out by self-administered questionnaire with 1,244 Mathayomsuksa 5 students and brainstorm meeting with academic persons who work about sexual risk among adolescents. Quantitative data were analyzed using percentage, average, standard diviation and Chi-square test and qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.

          The results showed that 14.6% the students have had sexual intercourse. The age of first sexual intercourse was 10 - 18. 37.78% of there did not use condom and 41.67 % had multiple partner. The relationships between social environment and sexual risk behavior among students with statistal significance (p–value < .05) were sexual attitudes, peer group, media consumption, parental mornitoring, presence of brothels, place to take drugs in community. The way to prevent sexual risk behavior among students were to strengthen adolescent training in self-esteem, enhancing life purpose and positive youth development with involvemeut of the family, school, community and civil society. This study suggests to change appropriate sexual attitude and value, peer group and close parental monitoring.
