Abstract

The purposes of this study were to investigate: 1) development of ethnic tourism in Vietnam, and 2) the present status of ethnic tourism in Vietnam. The data of this documentary research were collected from related books, textbooks, tourism policy, theses and academic articles related to ethnic tourism.

The findings indicated that ethnic tourism in Vietnam has developed from the demands of government to develop Vietnam’s tourism emphasizing sustainability, balance of the natural and cultural resources, distribution of jobs and income to all ethnic groups who lived in rural area, and indigenous people’s love for their culture amidst the tourist inflow after the Doi Moi economic renovation. Therefore, the status of ethnic tourism dose not aims at only creating jobs and income but it also being a tool for instilling in ethnic groups to preserve their culture and tradition as heritage for future generations.
