Dharma practice among the elderly population primarily faces challenges related to walking, making walking meditation (jongkrom) an interesting problem to address and improve for older practitioners. This research article aims to: 1) Study the current conditions, problems, and essential needs in vipassana walking meditation for the elderly, 2) Develop a smart assistive device for vipassana walking meditation specifically designed for the elderly, 3) Test and evaluate satisfaction with the device, and 4) Disseminate knowledge through a production manual and usage guidelines for the device. The research employed an action research methodology. Key informants were specifically selected as 30 elderly Dharma practitioners of any gender. Research instruments included interviews and satisfaction assessment forms. Data was analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods through content analysis and descriptive narrative.
The research findings revealed that elderly Dharma practitioners mostly experience lower body mobility issues including slow walking, decreased strength, easy fatigue, and time limitations. Additional problems include mindfulness lapses, poor balance, and lack of private space. Therefore, the assistive walking meditation device design needed to consider usage patterns, various component modules, storage requirements, durability, and power sources. From testing and satisfaction evaluations, the first-round total score was at a high level (=3.51), while the second-round total score reached the highest level (=4.55). It can be concluded that the device is suitable for practical use.
