Abstract

This research aims to achieve two objectives: 1) to study the information consumption behaviors of undergraduate students on online social networks, and 2) to examine the relationship between media literacy and information consumption behaviors on online social networks. It is a survey-based exploratory study conducted with a sample group comprising first-year undergraduate students from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus, who enrolled in the Digital Literacy course during the first semester of the academic year 2023. A total of 341 students consented to participate in the study and permitted the use of their data for research purposes. The research utilized an online questionnaire as the research instrument and analyzed the data using frequency analysis, percentages, and Chi-square tests. The research findings indicate that 1) the majority of students exhibit a behavior of using online social media through mobile phones/smartphones within the school premises. The significant factor influencing internet usage is the convenience of accessing information. The primary objective of using online social network services among students is for educational purposes, such as online learning and information retrieval. The frequency of using online social network services is seven days a week, with students spending 7-9 hours per day. 2) The analysis of the relationship between media literacy and information literacy with behaviors of using online social networks, using Chi-square, found that media and information literacy correlate with behaviors of using online social networks. The three main objectives include staying informed with general news, facilitating communication and conversations, and engaging in recreational activities. The research findings will be used by the researchers for future development planning, refining teaching methodologies, and organizing appropriate activities to further enhance student development.
