Abstract

This research aimed to: 1) examine the business environment of underground electrical construction contractors; 2) investigate the problems and obstacles faced by these businesses; 3) explore the relationships among the business environment, problems and obstacles, and their impacts on business operations; and 4) propose strategic adaptation development guidelines for underground electrical construction businesses. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The quantitative research involved multiple regression analysis to assess the relationship between independent variables—namely, the business environment and operational problems—and the dependent variable, which is the strategic adaptation of underground electrical construction businesses. Data were collected from 500 respondents using structured questionnaires. The qualitative component utilized in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with 21 key informants, and the findings were presented descriptively.
The results revealed that: 1) the internal business environment was rated at the highest level overall, with leadership being the most prominent factor, followed by organizational infrastructure and technological development. The external environment was rated at a high level, particularly in the areas of technology and government policy; 2) the main problems and obstacles in strategy development included labor/personnel shortages, transportation issues, and management challenges; 3) the business environment, along with problems and obstacles, significantly influenced the adaptive strategies of underground electrical construction businesses. Key internal environmental factors included leadership and technological development, while economic and political factors were most influential externally; and 4) strategic adaptation development guidelines were proposed at three levels: organizational strategies, business-level strategies, and operational strategies.
