Characteristics of the Thai Language in the Ayutthaya Period: A Study Based on the Daily Records of Ok Phra Wisut Sunthon (Kosa Pan)

Abstract
This research article aims to study the characteristics of the Thai language during the Ayutthaya period. The data set consisted of 68 pages from the daily records of Ok Phra Wisut Sunthon (Kosa Pan). The concept of language change was used as an analytical framework. The research findings reveal that in terms of orthography, there were inconsistencies in the use of consonants, vowels, tonal marks, and punctuation marks. In terms of vocabulary, only lexical loss was observed. Regarding semantics, the study found semantic narrowing, semantic shift, and negative connotation development. With regard to grammar, changes were found in both word functions and syntactic structures. Each aspect of change is interconnected with changes in other areas, representing internal change. As for external change, the use of loanwords was noted. Additionally, prominent features included the use of idioms, conjunctions, and reduplicated words, which clearly illustrate the characteristics of the Thai language during the Ayutthaya period.Top of Form
