The Newsworthiness Produced by Ubon Ratchathani University’s Communication Arts Students on The Louder Website
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article’s key academic argument is that news writing by communication arts students and published on the Louder website reflects an overlap between two elements of newsworthiness: interestingness and prominence. Some articles, however, do not reflect a good balance of these two elements. This research article is based on an examination of 30 news articles and feature stories published on the website https//:thelouder.co by former and current communication arts students at Ubon Ratchathani University who had joined the project entitled Journalism that Builds Bridges, which was hosted by the Foundation for Isan Education and People’s Media. These 30 articles were divided into 6 categories: 1) arts and culture, entertainment, and sports; 2) society and education; 3) politics; 4) history; 5) environment; and 6) gender. The findings show that these articles had both prominence and interestingness. In terms of prominence, themes were concerned with government projects and policies that have a broad impact on individuals, communities, and societies.
The analysis of newsworthiness in terms of interestingness shows that all 30 articles prioritized physical and emotional proximity to the readers. This is followed by timeliness or perspectives towards issues being reported (which was found in 22 articles), and conflicts and their consequences (each of which was found in 13 articles). Seven articles addressed gender issues including gender identity and sexuality. Six articles featured issues related to prominence. It should be noted that all the 30 articles by these communication arts students did not focus on the following newsworthy elements: sensationalism based on human interests, oddity, suspense, or mystery.
