From Western to Chinese Influence: Cavendish banana expansion, local Impact and Adaptability
Main Article Content
Abstract
When exploring banana cultivars, one may employ the theoretical lens of colonial history. When we examine Cavendish banana-growing and related global industries, it can be seen that expansion of banana production has not just simply been based only on processing in the fruit economy, but also reflects the political economy of banana cultivation. This termed “economic imperialism”, applies to centuries of western multinational companies acquisitions, supported by western nation-states. This article explores Cavendish banana plantations which have expanded recently from China into the Mekong region. By applying documented research for comparison, the article found that the recent banana plantations belonging to Chinese investors are both similar and unique in production systems and the relationship of investors, laborers and resource usages. It also reveals the significant impact of Chinese investors on localities and that it is similar to the impact of western investors.
