การใช้มาตรฐานเมทาดาทาสำหรับเอกสารจดหมายเหตุก่อปัญหาสามประการ คือ 1) การใช้มาตรฐานคำอธิบายไม่ครบถ้วนจึงขาดข้อมูลบริบทในการทำความเข้าใจเอกสาร 2) ข้อมูลเชิงพรรณนามีเนื้อหาซับซ้อน และ 3) ไม่สามารถแลกเปลี่ยนข้อมูลข้ามระบบ ด้วยเหตุนี้ สภาการจดหมายเหตุสากลจึงพัฒนา Records in Contexts - Conceptual Model (RiC-CM) เพื่อเป็นมาตรฐานคำอธิบายเอกสารจดหมายเหตุโดยเขียนคำอธิบายในรูปแบบ RDF triple หรือ subject + predicate + object ซึ่งช่วยให้มนุษย์และคอมพิวเตอร์เข้าใจความหมาย บทปริทัศน์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสำรวจประเด็นที่เกี่ยวข้องกับ RiC-CM ซึ่งพบว่าผู้ใช้งานต้องการแนวปฏิบัติและตัวอย่างการใช้งาน สภาการจดหมายเหตุสากลได้แก้ปัญหาโดยการประกาศ Records in Contexts – Ontology ที่พัฒนาภายใต้มาตรฐาน RiC-CM เพื่อเป็นแบบอย่างการใช้งาน การจัดทำคำอธิบายภายใต้มาตรฐาน RiC-CM อาจเป็นภาระสำหรับนักจดหมายเหตุเมื่อนำมาใช้งานโดยปราศจากความรู้เทคโนโลยีและเวลา
