Factor Affecting the Achievement in Calculus 1 of Students in Buriram Rajabhat University

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to 1) study the attitudes toward Mathematics, attention, of students, thinking skills, achievement motives, teaching quality of teachers, basic knowledge, and  learning achievement in Calculus 1 subject of students at Buriram Rajabhat University, and 2) examine the influences of attitudes toward Mathematics, attention, in learning, thinking skills, achievement motives, teaching quality of teachers, basic knowledge that affected learning achievement of students at Buriram Rajabhat University. The sample used in this research was students of Buriram Rajabhat University in the 2015 academic year. They were derived by a simple stratified sampling. The research instruments were a learning achievement test, a questionnaire on the factors affecting a learning achievement, a think skill test, and a test of a basic knowledge. Statistics used in data analysis were standard deviation, Pearson’s correlation coefficient and a multiple regression analysis. The research findings were as follows: 1) The factors which were related to a learning achievement in Calculus one with a significance of 0.01 were an attitude, attention, achievement motives, thinking skills and teachers’ teaching quality. The value of a correlation coefficient between predictive variables of attitude, attention, motives, thinking skills and teachers’ teaching quality was equivalent to 0.759 . 2) The factors which influenced a learning achievement were thinking skills (X₅), teachers’ teaching quality (X₄), and attention (X₂). These three factors could explain variance of learning achievement by 37.5%. An equation can be shown as followe: Equation in raw scores: =  -3.466 + 0.325X₅ + 1.871X₄ + 0.146X₂  and Equation in standard scores: = 0.374Z₅ + 0.302Z₄ + 0.216Z₂.
