Application of Concept of Humanism in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy to Reduce the Attachment in Materials

Abstract

The purpose of this research are 1) to study the humanistic attitudes in Theravade Buddhist
philosophy, and 2) to analyze the humanist concepts in Theravade Buddhist philosophy to reduce
the materialistic attachment. The research found that Metaphysical attitudes focus on actual
enlightenment according to natural law. Epistemological attitudes focus on intelligence and the
acquisition of true knowledge, and ethical attitudes focus on developing a life and a soul into an
ideal human being, complete with value and dignity in humanity. The research results of materialistic
attachment found that one important reason is: The domination of thought that causes the concept.
"The object is the most valuable thing for mankind." This concept causes problems for those who
attach with objects and world’s problems. Modifying the concept by using intelligence, which cause
the right views to attain truth leads to the realization of reality. It elevates worth of human's spirit
and dignity to itself. Using the principles of Kalama and Yogyakarta consider the validity of the
information received. Do not lost with the flow of society and domination of thought. Use the middle
way of life to make a balance between the needs of the physical and mental. All these material are
the way to reduce materialistic attachment
