Basic color terms evolution in Lanna language

Abstract
The objective of the study is to analyze and compare basic color terms in 5 periods of Lanna
language. Berlin and Kay (1969) was used as an approach in the study. Five periods were carefully
selected according to pervious historical study; it was divided to B.E. 1898-2100 (A.D. 1355-1557),
B.E. 2101-2316 (A.D. 1558-1773), B.E. 2317-2474 (A.D. 1774-1931), B.E. 2475-2503 (A.D. 1932-1960),
and B.E. 2504-2560 (A.D. 1961-2017). It was found that the evolution of Lanna basic color terms
were in stage 2, 5, 7, 7, and 7 respectively. The order of basic color terms of Lanna in B.E. 2504-2560
(A.D. 1961-2017) was shown to correspond with Berlin and Kay’s theory. However, in B.E. 1898-2100
(A.D. 1355-1557), B.E. 2101-2316 (A.D. 1558-1773), B.E. 2317-2474 (A.D. 1774-1931), and B.E.
2475-2503 (A.D. 1932-1960), it was found that the order of basic color terms of Lanna were not
correspond to the theory. In addition, the study gives a constructive guideline of methodology for
studying basic color terms evolution in other languages.
