The Situation and Role of the Northern Thai Dialect in Maekok River Basin

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to investigate the situation and role of northern Thai
dialect in Maekok River Basin; and to examine the changes and factors affecting the changes of
northern Thai dialect in Maekok River Basin.The population and the research area were the
northern Thai dialectspeakers in 120 villages in the Maekok River Basin. The data collected by
using the interview. The findings showed that the language change in regard to lexical items used
by three-age-group users were categorized into three groups. First, 914 semantic units (63.03%)
were eligible to identify that three-age-group users clearly used northern Thai dialect. Second, 500
semantic units (34.48%) were eligible to identify that three-age-group users used northern Thai
dialect in combination with central Thai dialect (Bangkok dialect). Third, 36 semantic units (2.49%)
were eligible to identify that three-age-group users used only central Thai dialect. Also, the results
revealed the relationship between the role of northern Thai dialect in Maekok River Basin and the
language behavior of people in the community with the mean score at 19.44 (81.00%) which meant
that the community still concentrated on using northern Thai dialect at the high level. The current
changes of northern Thai dialect in Maekok River Basin were found at vowel and syllable units.
People in age group one showed the highest level of changes and then followed by people in age
group two. So, age factor held the highest effect towards language change.
