The Development of Buriram’s Silk Identity to Commercial Product Design
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purposes of this research were to examine and collect Buriram silk information, to analyze Buriram silk information for applying as a concept used in commercial product design, and to synthesize Buriram silk identity that suits the design of commercial products through a mixed method research design: survey, qualitative and quantitative research design. Eleven groups of Buriram silk from 23 districts with ethnic identity in four distinct ethnicities: Thai-Lao, Thai-Korat, Thai-Khmer, and Thai-Kui were purposively selected by using Line Blend theory and Triaxial Blend theory in identifying the silk identity. The obtained identity was analyzed and synthesized by the use of evaluation forms evaluated by five participants from design experts and local wisdom elites, and 100 participants from Thai and foreigner tourists.
The results showed that the patterns, derived from the two theories, included a total of 552 designs. In the prototyping process, seven patterns were used
for weaving and designing into four types of prototype products with three stypes in one set: cushion, lady’s vest and glasses box. Moreover, a handbook collecting the body of knowledge relevant to silks of four ethnicities in Buriram province was also developed.
