Abstract

This research aimed at studying the context, basic data, cultural economic changes, social capital affected cultural economics and a comparison of the relationship of social capital to community problems and the crisis of Thai and Vietnamese farmers. In-depth interview and group discussions techniques were conducted in this qualitative research. Key informants were farmers in Surin, Thailand and Ca Mau, Vietnam. Each country would have a group of 60 key informants, a total of 120 people, and divided into two groups of 12 people. Content analysis used to analyze data. The study indicated that the context and basic data on cultural economics of Thai and Vietnamese farmers. Ca Mau Province, Vietnam Located in the Mekong Delta, water is available throughout the year. Rice can be grown 2-3 times a year. For Surin which located in the northeastern part of Thailand. It can produce jasmine rice that is well known to the world. In each area, rice can be cultivated one a year. But for the rice fields in the irrigation reservoir, rice can be grown twice a year. In terms of cultural economic change of Thai and Vietnamese farmers after the founding of diplomatic relations was found. Vietnam has insufficient food supply due to internal and external war. No inheritance of local wisdom in rice farming from the ancestors to the offspring. Because the war has caused a lot of problems, there would be only cooperatives system. Later, when the government had a policy of " Đổi Mới", the farmers had the right to land. Thus, farmers pay attention to their own fields and focus on production. For Thai Farmers, rice production has evolved and changed according to changing economic and social conditions. In addition, the production is based on market demand. The trend of organic rice production is increasing, and also the application of wisdom in rice production. The study also found that social capital affected cultural economic and way of life of Thai and Vietnamese farmers, namely; Human resources capital, social and political capital, technology capital, Economic capital and organizational relationships supports capital. In addition, Surin has drought problems. The community has a common wisdom and agricultural groups to solve problems. The government has a policy to insure damage to agricultural crops. While in Ca Mau, there was disaster in the area. The government is organizing military or student aid. It also found that the community still lacked a strong group that helped solve the problem.
