The Analysis of Sonny Stitt’s: Improvisation on “I Can't Give You Anything But Love”

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze Sonny Stitt's ideas on improvisation and to develop improvisation; a musician outstanding in improvisation Musical style Bebop in the song "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," which is on the album Sits with Oscar Peterson Trio in a jazz style. In order to apply what is obtained from the melody transcription adapting for the students. Furthermore, it is a guideline for practice to develop students' skills correctly, theoretically, and practically on the saxophone technique.
The result of concept analysis and melody development, Sonny Stitt is characterized by the improvisation of the song “I Can't Give You
Anything But Love,” using Jazz language and specific techniques based on the analysis of the book “Elements of the Jazz Language for the Developing Improvisor”. It shows what elements correspond to the analysis: Three
components were used to determine the issues in the analysis, the 3-b9, Change-Running, and the Bebop Scale, which were integrated into the
improvisation, and found that other components were also used in improvisation. However, the value gained from the study through applying the three
elements as part of improvisation training. It is beneficial for those who put it into practice to enhance it into proficiency while practicing improvisation in songs. It can also be applied to jazz songs with high quality and
proficiency in music performance.
