Translation Strategies of Chinese Series Titles in WeTV Application to Thai Languange

Abstract

 This research aimed to study strategies for translating the Chinese series titles by compiling all lists of series from the WeTV application a total of 80 titles (August to September 2020) were categorized by the genre of the series including analyzed translation strategies used to translate Chinese series titles into Thai. Results showed that there were four of translation strategies for Chinese series titles. The most popular method used in all genres such as romantic series, Yaoi series (MST), action series, teenage love series, retro series, drama, and mystery series was making up new titles from 45 series, the translator was able to come up with new titles freely. Followed by 19 expanded translations, this tactic, the translators translated based on the original title, but extended it to make it interesting. As for integrated translations of the 9 series, the translator used the original meaning of the story to name it to complete the title and communicate well with the audiences. Finally, the 7 series were translated using Literal translation of the Chinese title but may differ only in the structure of the language.
