Abstract

This article considers the ways in which certain cultural practices have changed for the Yunnan Chinese who migrated to Chiang Dao, Chiangmai in Northern Thailand. While many of the same festivals are observed in both Yunnan, China and Thailand, the migrants who have settled in Arunothai in Muang Na, Chiang Dao have for a variety of reasons adapted and changed the ways in which such festivals as the Lunar New Year, the Qingming Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Jong Yuan Festival, the Moon Festival, and the Chong Yang Festival are observed. The article focuses on how changes to rituals, activities and observances all reflect a delicate yet dynamic interplay between the preservation and transmission of cultural traditions, on the one hand, and the effects of geography, time and being a diaspora living within another dominant culture's borders, on the other.
