Abstract
The purpose of this pater is to study the translation strategies from A Series of Unfortunate Event: The Bad Beginning by Arita Phongtharanon. The translation strategies were divided into two types: direct translation and meaningful translation. The results revealed that the meaningful translation strategy (56%) was used more often than the direct translation strategy (44%). In addition, it was found that the direct translation strategy was used in word-based translation than in sentences. Maintaining the meaning of both words and sentences is difficult because the original language (English) and the translated version (Thai) are different in terms of vocabulary and sentence structures. On the other hand, the meaningful translation strategy was found in sentence-based translation than the word-based one. In conclusion, the meaningful translation strategy including omission, addition, and expansion of meaning, tended to be used throughout the translated version in order to make it understandable.
