Syntactic and Semantic Property of ‘jan’ in Modern Thai

Abstract
This study aimed to: 1) analyze the syntactic and semantic properties of the word jan; and 2) analyze its semantic extension and grammatical functions in Modern Thai. A total of 1,000 tokens were collected from the Thai National Corpus and various online media sources. The findings show that jan in Modern Thai can perform four grammatical functions: a transitive verb, a modifier or adverb, a preposition, and a conjunction.
Seven meanings of the word were identified. These include causing an entity to move in a particular direction, preventing movement, maintaining a position or state, verifying or confirming, and expressing consistency and stability. The word also functions as a connective indicating the endpoint of space, time, and activity, as well as a clause connector indicating the endpoint of an event. The analysis further indicates that the first and second meanings are the core meanings from which five additional semantic pathways have developed through metaphorical and metonymic processes. Overall, the findings suggest that the verb jan has extended semantically from a content word to a grammatical word, similar to several other motion verbs in Thai.
