Visual Arts Approaches to Reflect Multicultural Peace through The Ching–Pret Tradition at Wat Kuhapimuk, Yala

Abstract

            This study examines the role of the Ching Pret tradition at Wat Kuhapimuk, Yala, as a cultural medium reflecting peace in a multicultural society, amid a region often portrayed through conflict and religious-ethnic differences. Employing a qualitative approach, the research utilized observation, in-depth interviews, and symbolic analysis to gather data from rituals, activities, and symbols associated with the tradition. The aim was to understand community participation and the underlying concepts, while also applying the findings to creative visual art projects through installation art inspired by the research insights.

            The findings reveal that Ching Pret is not merely a Buddhist ritual but a communal activity that brings together people of different religions and ethnicities equally—through merit-making ceremonies, food sharing, games, and parading of the “mub.” These practices reflect generosity, gratitude, and peaceful coexistence. Cultural symbols, such as stacked lunch boxes and traditional sweets, convey meanings of sharing and community bonding.

            A key discovery is that Ching Pret in the cave-front community functions as a space for reconciliation, preserving local traditions while establishing social mechanisms that reduce conflict and foster unity. This study highlights how art and culture can serve as creative forces to enhance peace in multicultural settings and offers a model for future research and applications in cultural and fine arts studies.
