The Development of Local Tour Guide’s English Speaking Ability in Chiang Dao District, Chiang Mai Province

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to: 1) study information related to tour guiding potential of local tour guides in Chiang Dao District, Chiang Mai; and 2) develop English speaking ability of local tour guides in Chiang Dao District, Chiang Mai. The local tour guides were chosen using purposive sampling. Research instruments in this study were a questionnaire for English language needs analysis, an English lesson, and an English-speaking proficiency test. Descriptive statistics, such as frequency, means, percentages, and standard deviation, were used to analyze the data. The findings of the research were as follows: 1) the majority of the local tour guides who participated in the study were women over the age of 46. They have worked as local tour guides for over five years. Describing stone’s and sacred item’s shapes in Chiang Dao Cave, rules and regulations, and history and origin of Chiang Dao Cave were the topics they required respectively. 2) English speaking ability of the local tour guides in Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai increased from fair to good level after attending the research project.
