Desirable Qualities and Assessment Guidelines for Singing Competition Adjudicators in Singing Competition

Abstract

This article aims to present the concept of judging singing competitions as a form of professional adjudication. The study synthesizes the roles, desirable attributes, evaluation guidelines, and ethics for song contest judges. The analysis is based on a synthesis of relevant academic literature combined with professional experience in music and singing competition adjudication. The synthesis reveals that judges must possess knowledge and understanding of music, skills in vocal analysis, and the ability to assess singing across various dimensions. These dimensions include fundamental vocal quality, melody, rhythm, articulation/pronunciation, style and emotion, difficulty of the composition, and stage presence. Furthermore, it reflects upon the desirable qualifications of the judges, the necessity of adhering to professional ethics such as impartiality, transparency, and professional accountability. The article also illustrates the proper conduct of judges before, during, and after the song contest, along with guidelines for capacity building for judges. This is intended to promote standardization, fairness, and professional credibility in the song contest, ensuring it gains public acceptance and trust.
