FACTORS AFFECTING INMATES WHO DISOBEY DISCIPLINE OF THE AYUTTHAYA YOUTH CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION

Abstract

This research article’s objectives were 1) to study the causes of disciplinary violations of inmates in the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Youth Correctional Institution and 2) to study guidelines for preventing inmates from disciplinary violations in the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Youth Correctional Institution. The study design used a mixed method research, starting from Qualitative Research; it used in-depth interviews with two groups of 10 key informants, data were analyzed using content analysis by separating and removing important content points in order to summarize the research results then the results were used as guidelines for creating questionnaires for using in quantitative research. The tool used in quantitative research was a questionnaire with a confidence value of 0.90, data were analyzed using frequencies, percentage, mean and standard deviation. The research results found that: 1) The causes of disciplinary violations by young prisoners in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Prison were caused by 3 factors: (1) Personal factors, including not receiving benefits, lack of restraint, lack of care, and relationships within the family. (2) Environmental factors, including peer groups and insufficient staff. (3) Factors within perception and motivation, including a lack of publicizing benefits and a lack of motivation. 2) Guidelines for preventing prisoners from committing disciplinary offenses for youth prisoners at Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Prison, consisting of 5 areas were (1) Prisoner classification, (2) Education, (3) Rehabilitation, (4) Technology and (5) Prisoner welfare and benefits. From the research results, there were 5 recommendations; (1) to provide enjoyment and lessen stress, correctional facilities should plan recreational activities. (2) Correctional institutions should reduce overcrowding within the institutions, reducing competition for resources between inmates. (3) Correctional facilities should adopt modern technologies and innovations to lighten the load on staff members. (4) Institutions of correction should offer chances to prisoners who violated rules for the first time. (5) Penalties for prisoners who consistently violated the rules should be increased.
