This study pursued two aims: 1) to identify the problems and needs of fourth-year accounting students, instructors and administrators at Chuxiong Normal University regarding employability-related practical skills, and 2) to propose an academic administration approach for enhancing the practical skills of accounting students. A stratified random sample of 88 students and 31 teachers and administrators was drawn using the Krejcie–Morgan formula. Data were collected through two questionnaires and an online focus-group discussion. These two tools covered several teaching mechanisms such as the use of a five-point Likert scale. Expert scoring confirmed content validity and internal consistency by Cronbach's alpha. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations) were used to interpret responses against pre-defined benchmark ranges.

Results showed that: Excessive exam-oriented curriculum design and over-reliance on summative assessment were rated as high-level problems. Students also reported outdated content and limited practical application. The proposed approaches included:
1) curriculum reform with increased practical credits and the use of real cases; 2) teaching innovations that shifted toward case-based and project-based learning; 3) stronger practice support through expanded internships and updated digital laboratories; 4) assessment reform that emphasized hands-on performance and problem-solving skills; 5) faculty development focused on industry-related certifications; and 6) deeper school–enterprise collaboration.
