USING SCROL-BASED LEARNING STRATEGY IN CONJUNCTION WITH GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS TO ENHANCE ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS OF NINTH-GRADERS

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to 1) Compare students’ English reading comprehension ability after using SCROL strategy with graphic organizers with post-test and 70 percent criterion, and 2) Study the students’ attitude towards learning English. The sample group was 30 grade 9 students at Matthayomsuksa Chulabhorn school, under the Office of Nakhon Si Thammarat Secondary Educational Service area Office, in the second of the academic year 2023. They were obtained by simple random sampling using the room as the sampling unit. The research instruments were 16 English lesson plans by using SCROL strategy with graphic organizers, 2) 30 multiple-choice items of the English reading comprehension test, and 3) 15 items of the attitude questionnaire towards learning English. The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation (S.D.), and t-test of One Sample Test. The results of this study were as follows; 1) The students had the average of English comprehension for 80.89% of the total score passed the criteria which was higher than 70 percent criterion at the .05 level of significance. When considering the three levels of English reading comprehension ability, the highest percentage of average scores is interpretive statements level for 85%, followed by applied statements level for 79.72%, and the lowest percentage of average scores is literal statements level for 77.77%, respectively. 2) The students’ attitude towards learning English was at a good level.
