The Role of Newspaper in Football Gambling-related Newscasting

Abstract
This qualitative study was conducted to investigate : 1.) roles of newspaper towards football gambling ; 2.) motivation of reporters ; and 3.) factors determining roles of newspaper towards the presentation of football gambling news. This study employed an analysis of content appeared in the newspaper namely : Thairat, Matichon, and Siam Sports together with an in-depth interview conducted with reportors of the newspaper and focused on serious newspaper, non-serious newspaper, and sport newspaper with quantitative research by by frequency count of football gambling news presentation.
Results of the study revealed that Thairat and Matichon newspaper played roles in news presentation most, followed by provision of knowledge and suggestions, respectively. Meanwhile, Siam Sports did not present news about football gambling. The following were found :
- Role about news presentation the following were presented most : 1.1) measures on the suppression of football gambling provided by various agencies ; 1.2) arrest of Thai and foreign offenders on football gambling ; 1.3) campaign on anti-football gambling of office of Thai Health Promotion Foundation and education institutes ; and 1.4) situations in foreign countries during the World Football season, respectively.

3.1) suggestion to parents or guardians to keep an eye on children to prevent from football gambling ; 3.2) suggestion about offender arrest of concerned agencies ; 3.3) suggestion to football gamblers to realize disadvantage of gambling ; and 3.4) suggestion about the amendment of gambling law, respectively.
Regarding motivation, it was found the reporters of the newspaper focused on serious newspaper, non- serious newspaper had motivation to present football gambling news due to the following : 1.) realization on duty of mass media ; 2.) construction of pride for themselves ; and
3.) responsibility on assigned tasks. The following were factors determining roles of the newspaper towards the presentation of football gambling : 1.) environmental factor ; 2.) influence of football gambling mafia ; 3.) difficulty in data seeking ; 4.) work policy ; 5.) influence of advertisement
