Relationship Between Board Structure and Performance of Companies Listed on The Stock Exchange of Thailand Real Estate and Construction Industry
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between board structure and the performance of companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in the real estate and construction industry. Secondary data were collected from 465 firm-year observations over a six-year period, from 2560 B.E. to 2565 B.E. (2017–2022). The statistical methods used in the study included descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, namely correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The dependent variable was firm performance, measured by return on equity (ROE) and Tobin’s Q. The independent variables comprised six dimensions of board structure: board size, board independence, number of board meetings, proportion of female directors, proportion of board members with expertise in finance and accounting, and board compensation. The control variables were firm size, firm age, company growth, financial risk, business sector, and year of study. The results indicated that board size and the proportion of board members with expertise in finance and accounting had statistically significant positive relationships with ROE (B = 1.185, p < .01; B = 7.183, p < .10). In contrast, board independence and the proportion of female directors had statistically significant negative relationships with ROE (B = -9.809, p < .10; B = -9.060, p < .05). In addition, board compensation had a positive relationship with Tobin’s Q (B = 0.297, p < .01), while board independence and the number of board meetings had negative relationships with Tobin’s Q (B = -0.543,
p < .01; B = -0.019, p < .01). The findings are expected to help stakeholders identify an optimal board structure and provide a foundation for future research.
