Abstract

Global warming driven by CO₂ emissions from the transport sector has made the transition to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) imperative, positioning BEVs as a cornerstone of smart-city environmental and mobility systems. This study therefore: (1) examines technology acceptance and purchase intention for BEVs among early adopters in Thailand; (2) analyzes the impact of UTAUT2 constructs—performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, price value, and habit—on BEV purchase intention; and (3) proposes policy recommendations to foster BEV adoption in Thailand. A cross-sectional survey of early adopters using an online questionnaire yielded 211 valid responses, with a response rate of 87.92%. Hierarchical multiple regression results indicate that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, and price value exert significant positive effects on BEV purchase intention, whereas social influence, hedonic motivation, and habit do not reach statistical significance. These findings confirm that perceived performance benefits, ease of use, supportive infrastructure, and perceived price value are the primary drivers of BEV purchase intention among early adopters in Thailand. Policy implications include accelerating the development of charging infrastructure and clearly communicating the long-term cost benefits of BEVs to support national CO₂ reduction targets and advance sustainable smart city development.
