Intergenerational Power: Lessons from Academic Service through a Volunteer Program for Sustainable Community Development

Abstract
This article presents the concept of intergenerational power, which integrates intergenerational learning, social capital, and participatory community development through a volunteer program in Bang Kachao, Thailand. Elderly community members and university students participated in five community-based learning stations, where local elders transmitted traditional knowledge and co-created innovative practices. This process fostered mutual knowledge exchange, trust-building, and cross-generational collaboration, effectively narrowing the generational gap and strengthening social capital within the community.
The findings highlight sustainable community development across three dimensions: economic (developing unique local products and eco-tourism to generate circulating income), social (establishing intergenerational networks and systems of knowledge transfer), and environmental (promoting resource-conscious practices and environmental stewardship). The university plays a crucial role as a bridging space across generations, developing lifelong learning curricula and institutionalizing intergenerational learning as part of its proactive academic service mission.
Policy recommendations include establishing community-based intergenerational learning centers, developing intergenerational tour guide programs, and promoting the concept of intergenerational power as a national policy framework to support an aging society. Such initiatives lay the foundation for a more inclusive and compassionate society, where all generations coexist in balance and mutual understanding.
