Abstract

This academic article forms part of the research project entitled “Mechanisms for Driving the Creative Economy Based on Buddhist Capital and Cultural Capital of Communities in Nakhon Pathom Province”. It focuses on examining the conceptual framework of utilizing cultural capital in developing community-based economies. The significance of cultural capital for grassroots economic development lies in its role as the foundation of community identity. Cultural capital—such as traditions, local wisdom, arts, and indigenous cuisine—creates distinctiveness and unique value for communities. It serves as a form of “capital” that is difficult to replicate, thereby generating new economic opportunities. When communities transform cultural capital into extended practices, such as handicrafts or cultural tourism, these become high value-added products and services, contributing to increased household and community income. This process connects indigenous knowledge with the economy, positioning cultural capital as a “bridge” linking meaningful coexistence with economic development. The approach emphasizes balance among income generation, quality of life, and local pride. Cultural traditions, rituals, and local wisdom also serve as attractions for visitors, stimulating community-based spending and creating new occupations, such as homestays, local guides, and small businesses. The integration of cultural preservation with value creation ensures that grassroots economies can not only “survive” but also “thrive” sustainably in the long term. Cultural capital is not merely a vestige of the past but rather a form of “creative energy” that enables communities to strengthen and sustain grassroots economic development. By transforming cultural capital into economic value while simultaneously preserving community identity, pride, and wisdom, local development becomes both meaningful and resilient.
