CHARACTERISTICS OF KHMER LOANWORDS IN THE THAI LANGUAGE THAT APPEAR IN KLONG LOK NITI EDITION OF HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCE KROM PHRAYA-DECHA DISORN

Abstract

This study aimed to study features of Khmer loan words that appeared in Klong Lok Niti by His Royal Highness Prince Krom Phraya-Decha Disorn and to compile Khmer loan words in the Thai language that appeared in Klong Lok Niti by His Royal Highness Prince Krom Phraya-Decha Disorn. This is qualitative research and the data were collected from related academic documents and analyzed using descriptive data.

          The findings revealed that 1) 3 types of features of Khmer loan words in Klong Lok Niti by His Royal Highness Prince Krom Phraya-Decha Disorn were found, namely (1) Khmer loan words used as royal language, (2) Khmer loan words that appear only in literature, and (3) Khmer loan words used as common words. 2) Based on the collection of Khmer loan words in the Thai language that appears in Klong Lok Niti by His Royal Highness Prince Krom Phraya-Decha Disorn, 312 words were found, including (1) 5 Khmer loan words used as royal language, (2) 68 Khmer loan words that appear only in literature, and  (3) 239 Khmer loan words used as common words. The knowledge learned from the findings found that most Khmer loan words in Klong Lok Niti by His Royal Highness Prince Krom Phraya-Decha Disorn were loan words used as common words, and it was found up to 239 words since Klong Lok Niti is teaching literature with an aim to teach all people to act according to the moral principles. Therefore, the words used were easily understood by all people. Hence, it was found that most words in the poem were common words that are different from many other Thai literature.
