LEADERSHIP AND THE SUPREME PATRIARCH’S NEW YEAR MESSAGES

Qualitative research was done to study the type of leadership exercised by His Holiness Somdet Phra Ariyavongsagatayana, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand. Transformational leadership frameworks developed by Bernard Bass and Bruce Avolio guided the analytical method. Secondary data was collected and triangulated from multiple sources and then analyzed by content analysis. Results were that His Holiness Somdet Phra Ariyavongsagatayana exercised five types of transformational leadership through annual new year messages from year 2018 to 2023: 1) vision; 2) emulation; 3) purpose; 4) action; and 5) education. Education was most emphasized, to encourage learning and self-fulfillment among his followers.
