Abstract

This research aimed to 1) study the characteristics of English vowels spoken by Thai people, 2) compare the phonetics characteristics of English vowels spoken by Thai people, and 3) analyze the interference of the Thai accent in English vowels. This study employed a quantitative research methodology according to the concept of contrastive and acoustic analysis as a research framework. The 20 informants divided by educational level and gender were Native speakers who speak Thai as their mother tongue and speak or study English as their second language. Purposive sampling was used, and the research instrument was 20 vocabulary words. The data were analyzed with the PRAAT program.

The results of this study were found that:

  1. Some characteristics of Thai vowels occurred in monophthongs and diphthongs of English pronunciation.
  2. Acoustic characteristics comparison by analyzing the 1st and 2nd formant frequencies of English vowels spoken by Thais with Standard Southern British English found that most of the vowel sounds were pronounced in the same direction except for some English vowel sounds that were replaced by the interference of vowel sounds in Thai.
  3. There were four interferences of the Thai accent in English vowel pronunciations: 1) highlighting tense vowels, 2) lack of reduced vowels, 3) monophthongization, and 4) selecting vowels that are similar to their mother tongue to replace them.

The knowledge from this research can be applied and developed in education, especially in teaching and learning about English pronunciation for Thai people. Moreover, it can be the basic knowledge for solving the problems of English vowel pronunciation caused by the interference of their mother tongue are better and more effectively pronounced as a native speaker
