Abstract

This academic article aims to study the development of quality of life for stability of the community according to the principle of Majjhimãpatipadã. It has been found that the development that focuses on: economic growth; technological advances; convenient facilities; and modern communication systems; has caused more interactions. The prosperity, stability and sustainability of economic and social development of the country requires a strengthened community foundation through moderate living. Buddhism teaches people to lead their life with modesty, seclusion, and sufficiency in accordance with the principle of Majjhimãpatipadã or the middle way that means not adhering to the two extremes namely: Attakilamthãnuyoga i.e. the extreme of self-mortification; and Kãmasukhallikãnuyoga i.e. the extreme of sensual indulgence. In other words, it follows the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy including the moderation of oneself through living in self-sufficiency and being satisfied with what one attained. This is because people in society need to take into consideration on the limited natural resources and try to properly and fairly allocate and manage those resources by taking into account the next generation that will become resource consumers in the future.
