Guidelines for Entrepreneur Participation in Security at Tourist Attractions in Khao San Road, Bangkok

Abstract

This thesis is a study aims to 1) study the characteristics of entrepreneur participation in security in tourist attractions in Khao San Road, 2) study the factors of entrepreneur participation in security in tourist attractions. 3) to study the conditions, problems and obstacles of the participation of operators in security in tourist attractions in the Khao San Road, and 4) to propose guidelines for the participation of operators in the security of tourist attractions in Khao San Road, Bangkok. In-depth interviews were conducted with 32 key informants, both from public and private sectors.  A focus group conversation was also conducted with 20 key informants consisted of entrepreneurs and business personnel’s in the Khao San Road area.

            The results from this study indicated that, by using a participatory approach, entrepreneurs should be involved and given the opportunity to submit their opinions, make plans, make decisions, and monitor and evaluate the safety and security regulation in their business areas. In addition, entrepreneurs should be involved in making changes and implementing standard safety and security practices. This study also demonstrated that there should be an increase in security force, effective communication with foreign tourists about safety and security regulations and screening points for illegal items and weapons. Entrepreneurs and business personnel must strictly comply with security regulations by installing CCTV and cooperating with police officials in order to raise confidence for both Thai and foreign tourists. Furthermore, road traffic in Khao San Road should be managed effectively by setting public transport points for buses and parking areas for cars and motorcycles. Entrepreneurs should not in any way cause traffic obstruction. Finally, public health and waste management for tourists should be applied to promote cleanliness, hygiene, and safety in Khao San Road Area. All these guidelines should help increase tourists’ satisfaction, word of mouth recommendation, and their return visits.
