Ban Phu’s Community - based Tourism Management with Cultural Conservation
This study aimed to (1) outline the development of the tourism organized by Ban Phu community which had an emphasis on local culture preservation, (2) investigate the operation process of the community in tourism management by upholding the philosophy of sufficiency economy and cultural preservation and (3) study the factors in the operation process, which led to the successful tourism management of the community. The data collection involved reviewing community-related documents, interviewing the head and the involved subjects responsible for the tourism management of Ban Phu, and conducting focus groups. The results showed that : 1. The wisdom of the Ban Phu villagers was in the same way as Phuthai people. According to these unique aspects, the head of the community had an idea and decided to initiate a home stay in the village. However, the project was not successful since there had been no interesting attractions. In addition, the village was not well-known among tourists, resulting in no customers. However, the village had won the prize for for being the OTOP Tourism Village. According to the mentioned honors, Ban Phu community proved itself to be efficient in providing services for tourists, making it a famous tourist attraction. 2. Ban Phu community used its village committees in implementing tourism management process. The village committees were divided into 6 units according to their duties. Community learning activities were organized and divided into 6 bases for the tourists to participate. The implementation of the management mechanism in preserving and restoring of Ban Phu’s culture was categorized as follows: 1) Local wisdom. The community learning center played a significant role in providing knowledge and preserving culture. 2) In terms of occupational promotion in arts and culture, Ban Phu community had formed an occupational group in order to preserve and restore their culture. 3) Moral and ethics promotion. Temples played an important role as a spiritual center of the community. 3. Operating factors leading to the achievement in tourism management of the community were: 1) the need and the unity of the community members to be a good host together. 2) having consciousness and pride in their Phuthai origin which had a simple life and hospitality. 3) having competency in competition.
