“Kwansong”: The Young Literature Contributing Knowledge and Entertainment through the Art of Literature
This article aimed to present the observations on reading and considering young adult literature, “Kwansong”, in order to help children to read literature most effectively and achieve both emotional and intellectual values. Typically, there are two suggestions of improving children’s effective literary reading skill. The first one is that teachers and parents have to elucidate children and explain them in details about a story children are reading. Moreover, when they have trouble reading literature, parents and teachers should help them cope with difficulties and obstacles to facilitate children’s reading. The second approach is that parents and teacher should pay attention on young adult literature since some moral lessons an author added in a story not only contributes knowledge to children, who are the target group of young adult literature, but also parents and teachers who take the major role in instructing and educating children. Therefore, it is undeniable that reading young adult literature could provide intellectual value for parents or significant others who are the role model of the children. According to the analysis of “Kwansong” by Chamaiporn Saengkranchang, apart from entertainment, which was emotional value perceived through the organization of literary elements and the use of Klon 8 rhyme scheme in prose, there was also intellectual value–the moral lessons. The readers, parents, teachers and significant others could apply the morals learned from the novel to their life with the purpose of being a good role model for other people. Moreover, the analysis suggested that the positive image of monks was emphasized through the main character, “Kwansong”, throughout the story. It might be because the author expected that the novel would encourage people, particularly monks, to concentrate more on their role and social functions. It came to the conclusion that “Kwansong” contributed knowledge and entertainment to many groups of readers, particularly if readers appreciate and realize moral value, they would behave properly for the sake of their own lives and society.
