บทคัดย่อ
บทความนี้ต้องการตรวจสอบถึงปฏิกิริยาของท้องถิ่นที่มีต่อการปฏิรูประบบราชการของสยามเมื่อช่วงกลางพุทธศตวรรษที่ 25 โดยเน้นไปที่คดีการลอบยิงนายอำเภอพรหมพิราม จังหวัดพิษณุโลก เมื่อช่วงต้นพุทธทศวรรษ 2470 และใช้วิธีการศึกษาแบบจุลประวัติศาสตร์กับวิธีการอ่านย้อนเกล็ดของการศึกษาผู้มีสถานะรองในการวิเคราะห์หลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์ ผลของการศึกษาได้แสดงให้เห็นว่า แม้การปฏิรูประบบราชการของรัฐสยามจะมีจุดประสงค์เพื่อรวมศูนย์อำนาจเข้าสู่ส่วนกลางที่ราชสำนักกรุงเทพฯ และสถาปนาโครงสร้างการปกครองแบบสมัยใหม่ที่เป็นอันหนึ่งอันเดียวกันทั่วพระราชอาณาจักร แต่การปฏิรูปดังกล่าวกลับยังต้องเผชิญกับความท้าทาย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง ความขัดแย้งและความไม่ลงรอยกันระหว่างข้าราชการท้องถิ่นและข้าราชการจากส่วนกลาง รวมทั้งความเป็นปฏิปักษ์กันระหว่างชุมชนท้องถิ่นกับผู้ถืออำนาจรัฐในส่วนกลางได้มีอิทธิพลสำคัญในการต่อรองกับข้าราชการรุ่นใหม่และในการท้าทายอำนาจรัฐ จนในท้ายที่สุด ความตึงเครียดเหล่านี้ได้ทวีความรุนแรงขึ้นจนนำไปสู่ความขัดแย้งและการลอบสังหาร
