Digital Approaches in Humanities Toward Sustainable Human Capital Development: A Synthesis of Multidisciplinary Research Program

This review article synthesizes the outcomes of the research program “Digital Approaches in Humanities toward Sustainable Human Capital Development,” which brought together 15 projects organized into three thematic clusters: mapping out research frameworks for Thai digital humanities (DH), developing innovative tools and methodologies, and critically reflecting on digital phenomena. The program aimed to address Thailand’s unique challenges in integrating digital technologies with humanities scholarship to foster sustainable human capital development. The review highlights how this interdisciplinary initiative created opportunities for collaboration across traditionally siloed fields, bridging gaps between humanities and technology. It discusses key advancements, such as ontology-based search engines and data visualization tools, which enhanced access to and analysis of cultural data. Simultaneously, the program underscored the enduring role of humanities in fostering critical thinking, ethical reflection, and cultural critique in a rapidly digitalizing society. The review also explores challenges, including the fragmentation of DH in Thailand, disciplinary divides, and the complexity of aligning global methodologies with local contexts. By emphasizing the need for scalable infrastructure, interdisciplinary collaboration, and culturally attuned approaches, this article reflects on the broader potential of DH to contribute to human capital development. By synthesizing the lessons learned from this program, the review advocates for a balanced integration of technological innovation with humanistic inquiry to advance inclusive and sustainable societies while preserving and promoting distinct cultural identities.
