Abstract

Purpose of the study: This qualitative study attempts to investigate the use of information for carrying out the university missions.

Methodology: Thirty-six administrators, comprising presidents, vice presidents, deans, and directors of 4 Rajabhat universities in the Northeast, Thailand were interviewed. One large-sized, two medium-sized, and one small-sized Rajabhat universities were selected to participate in this study.

Main findings: The majority of the administrators realized the importance of information as the tool for decision making, planning, solving various problems, as well as a reference and credentials for organization working operations. Most of the administrators used various sources of information including 1) personal information from their subordinates who performed their job functions, 2) Internet and 3) external information sources. In need of information, the managers performed their information search by themselves to ascertain that the search results were accurate. Also the analysis of the data revealed that the administrators used analytical data in the forms of figures, statistics, pictures, tables, and graphs. The data used for conducting 4 university missions: production of graduates, engagement of research, provision of academic services to communities, and preservation and dissemination of arts and cultures were accounted for 137 items. Of these items, 106 were used for production of graduates, 19 for research performance, 8 items for academic service provision, and 4 for preservation and dissemination of arts and cultures.

Applications of the study: The results of this study contributes to the formulation of guidelines for information management and development of Rajabhat University information system.
