บทคัดย่อ
บทความนี้นําเสนอภาพรวมโดยสังเขปของประเด็นความคิดเกี่ยวกับสถานะของสัตว์ตั้งแต่สมัยต้นพุทธกาลจนถึงในพระไตรปิฎก โดยพิจารณา "ระดับ" ของผลกระทบจากทุกข์ต่อความเป็นไปได้ ในการตรัสรู้ และค้นหาว่าสถานะของสัตว์ที่กําหนดในไตรภูมิ ทําให้สัตว์ถูกลดคุณค่าลงไปหรือไม่ บทความตอนแรกพิจารณาถึงคําในภาษาบาลีที่กล่าวถึงสัตว์ บทความตอนต่อมเป็นการทบทวนการอธิบายเรื่องวงชีวิตสัตว์แบบดั้งเดิม ส่วนเรื่องผลจากการอยู่ร่วมกันระหว่างมนุยและสดา มีกล่าวถึงสั้นๆ ในภาคผนวก
