Factors Creating a Situated Learning in Englishfor Specific Purposes of Tertiary Level Students

Abstract




The purpose of this study was to study factors creating a situated learning in English for Specific Purposes of tertiary level students. The key inform- ants of this research were 88 tertiary level students studying 1006208 English for Business and Technol- ogy 2 in the second semester of the academic year 2016 at Mae Fah Luang University. There are three instruments for collecting data which were 1) the observation in teaching and learning in English for specific purposes, 2) the record of opinion regarding to teaching and learning in English for a specific purposes and 3) a guideline in-depth interview for students to reflect in teaching and learning in English for a specific purposes. Focus group discussion was used to triangulate the data. The result of the study revealed that factors creating a situated learning in English for Specific Purposes of tertiary level students were 1) Learning Contents: Macro skills and Micro skills 2) Learning Activities 3) Authentic Learning Context 4) Roles of Learners 5) Learner Supportand6) Authentic Assessment. According to the study, when teachers of English for Specific Purposes applied factors creating a situated learning in teaching and learning, it was found that students could construct knowledge which included both content and operation knowl- edge.
