The Essence and Strategy presented in the Didactic Literature, Version of Phra Ariyanuwat Khemachari

Abstract

The research aimed to study the essence and strategy presented in the didactic literature,
version of Phra Ariyanuwat Khemacãri. The tenet of Kalaya Kulsuwan was used by the researcher
as a guideline for analysis of the essence of Buddhist teaching, in the mundane and super mundane
level, and the tenets of Kularb Mallikamat, Thewankan Mungpanklang and Jaruwn Thammawat
were adopted as a guideline for the analysis of strategies. The finding of research revealed that in
the essence in didactic literature, the version of Ariyanuwat Khemacãri, the Buddhist teaching on
the level of mundane insisted in teaching each person the principles of living and how to live with
others as well as sacred things by using ethics, precepts and moral virtue.
It was found that for the principle of ethics, there appeared the ethics for the ruling elite,
ethics for general people, ethics for men and ethics for women. In the didactic literature, the most
found ethics was the ethics for the ruling elite, ethics for women, ethics for general people and ethics
for men in respective order. For the moral principle, the third precept, abstaining from sexual
misconduct was the most appeared precept in didactic literature, which was followed by the second


precept, abstaining from stealing, the first precept, abstaining from killing, the fourth precept,
abstaining from telling lies and the fifth precept, abstaining from intoxicants or harmful substances..
The ethics that appeared in the didactic literature were ethics for the ruling elite, ethics for
men and ethics for women, the ethics, precepts and moral virtue, which were the principle of conduct
for Sumnum Bunum or Nirvana or superabundance level. In the didactic literature, the teachings
focused on accepting the precept, doing merit in order to reach Nirvana.
In the strategy in presenting the didactic literature, a version of Ariyanuwat Khemacari, it
was found that there are two forms of division according to the paragraph arrangement: the first was
dividing by the paraphrase of preaching and the second was dividing by the verse, in which , the
most found paragraph arrangement was arrangement by verse. For the story telling, the most
appeared strategy used was the narrative strategies, in which the narrator was the author of the story,
and one character was a narrator of the character appeared in the sequence, and comparison,
illustration and storytelling were used for easy understanding for readers or listeners as well as
helping in remembering the story as well.
