A Comparative Study of the Extended Meanings of “to Eat”

Abstract

This article aimed to analyze the extended meanings of the word "eat" in Thai and Chinese by collecting compound words that contain the word "eat" in verb + object pattern. The study findings indicated that the word "eat", which is the component of a compound word in Thai, has a total of 12 meanings: to spoil, to waste, to use up, to win, to intrude, to match, to receive, to corrupt, to have sex, to occupy, to depend , proper name. However, the Chinese word ว่า “吃”(chī) or "eat", which is the component of a compound word in Mandarin, has a total of 9 meanings: to receive, to corrupt, to intrude, to waste, to buy, to depend, to absorb, to work, and to use up. All these meanings were linked to the original meaning of the word "eat" through two strategies of semantic extension, metonymy and metaphor.
