Abstract

Deer leather was a major export of Siam during the 17th century. When Japan, the major importer of Siamese deer leather, implemented its foreign isolation policy in 1633 the Dutch East India Company stepped in to perform the middleman role for this lucrative trade. Rivalry to control the deer leather trade monopoly led to conflict between the Siamese palace and the Dutch East India Company. Negotiations to settle this conflict in 1663 resulted in Siam ceding extraterritorial rights to a Western power for the first time, during King Narai’s reign.
