บทคัดย่อ

มิชชันนารีชาวตะวันตกเริ่มเข้าถึงชุมชนชาติพันธุ์บนพื้นที่สูงในประเทศลาวและไทยช่วงต้นคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1950 อันเป็นผลจากการถูกขับออกจากประเทศจีนภายหลังเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองเมื่อปี 1949 มิชชันนารีหลายคนได้ทำการถ่ายภาพ ส่งจดหมายกลับบ้าน และบางคนได้เขียนและตีพิมพ์ประวัติส่วนตัวที่เน้นประสบการณ์การเผยแพร่ศาสนา หนึ่งในประเด็นร่วมที่พบในแหล่งข้อมูลดังกล่าวคือกลยุทธ์การเปลี่ยนศาสนาที่มิชชันนารีใช้ ซึ่งประกอบด้วยการแสดงอำนาจเหนือความเชื่อท้องถิ่น การทดแทนวัตถุบูชาสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ด้วยสัญลักษณ์ของคริสเตียน การให้บริการจ่ายยารักษาโรค การสอนให้อ่านออกเขียนได้ และการให้บริการหอพักนักเรียน ผู้เขียนนำเสนอว่ากลยุทธ์ดังกล่าวมีนัยของการแสดงถึงอำนาจของศาสนาคริสต์เหนือความเชื่อท้องถิ่น กับทั้งเป็นการนำเอาความมีอารยธรรมกว่าของชาวตะวันตกมาให้กลุ่มชนบนภูเขาที่ถูกมองว่ายังเป็นพวกล้าหลัง เนื่อหาในบทความนี้ได้จากการค้นคว้าสิ่งพิมพ์ ภาพถ่ายและจดหมายที่มิชชันนารีส่งกลับถึงโบสถ์ที่ต้นทาง ช่วงคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1950-1980 นอกนั้นเป็นข้อมูลจากการสังเกตุการณ์อันยาวนานของผู้เขียนและสัมภาษณ์เพิ่มเติม
