An AN ANALYSIS OF THE PHLENG SONG KHREUANG SCRIPTS IN THE WAT KOR’S ORAL POETRY BOOK OF HRH SIRINDHORN FOUNDATION VOL. 2

Abstract

The objective of this paper was to analyze the Phleng Songkroeng scripts, a genre of Thai folk songs, in the Wat Kor’s Oral Poetry Book Vol. 2: Phleng SongKroeng, which was published by the HRH Sirindhorn Foundation in July 2021. The methodology based on literary analysis, i.e. elements and values of oral literature. The findings were that all nine pieces of the Phleng Songkroeng were composed by Klorn Hua Diaw, a main kind of Klorn verses usually used in folk songs, for Phleng Choy could be divided into three forms: 1) the Phleng Choy written in the Klorn Hua Diaw mainly used in the whole performance; 2) the “Ton Phleng” (lit., the beginning of the song) of Phleng Choy taken from the Phleng Prop Kai; 3) the “Auen Long” (lit., vocalizing to the end) of Phleng Choy used in the final part of the Ton Phlengใ From the data found that the repertoires were taken from nine pieces of well-known folk tales and literary works in which the stories were extracted from interesting scenes which were suitable for the performance. All nine scripts of the Phleng Songkroeng was simple and used beautiful language which were the apparently characteristics. The lyrics and stories were concisely which were suitable for emotional expression as singing. In examining the literary values, the results were discovered in three aspects: 1. Language and Literature; 2) Thai Folk Songs and Performances; 3) Social and Cultural values.
