บทคัดย่อ
แนวคิดของ สจ็วต ฮอล (Stuart Hall) นักวิชาการผู้มีชื่อเสียงแห่งประเทศอังกฤษ ผู้มีภูมิหลังเป็นผู้อพยพจากประเทศจาไมกา ได้เคยวิเคราะห์ วิจารณ์ และนำเสนอ การแก้ไขปัญหาสังคมในเรื่องความขัดแย้งในเชิงเชื้อชาติ ชาติพันธุ์ ชนกลุ่มน้อยในประเทศยุโรปและประเทศอื่น ๆ ที่ดำเนินนโยบายความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรมนิยม ในช่วงทศวรรษที่ 80 แต่ข้อเสนอของฮอลไม่ได้รับความสนใจและนำมาเป็นนโยบาย ในขณะที่ผู้นำประเทศ เช่น เยอรมัน อังกฤษ ต่างก็ออกมาประกาศความล้มเหลวในการดำเนินนโยบายความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรม ผู้วิจัยค้นพบว่า เฉพาะแนวคิดชาติพันธุ์แนวใหม่ (new ethnicities) เมื่อปี ค.ศ.1995 บทวิเคราะห์แสดงให้เห็นถึงปัญหาการต่อสู้ของคนดำ ผู้อพยพ ชนกลุ่มน้อย ที่ใช้อัตลักษณ์ในเชิงสารัตถะ (essential identity) ทางเชื้อชาติมาปรับความสัมพันธ์จากการถูกกดขี่ในประเทศอังกฤษและสหรัฐอเมริกา ฮอลได้วิพากษ์ว่าจะสร้างปัญหาในระยะยาว ได้แก่การทำให้อัตลักษณ์กลายเป็นเรื่องการเมืองกลับจะยิ่งทำให้ไม่สามารถประสานตนเองเข้ากับสังคมที่อยู่อาศัย ซึ่งมีความแตกต่างหลากหลายทางสังคมและวัฒนธรรม และเสนอให้คิดในเชิงชาติพันธุ์แนวใหม่ คือการสร้างการประสานกับผู้คนที่มีความแตกต่างทางชาติพันธุ์ ชนชั้น โดยไม่ทำให้อัตลักษณ์ของตนเองกลายมาเป็นอัตลักษณ์ที่มีปัญหาในเชิงลดความแตกต่างทั้งภายในและภายนอกกลุ่ม และกลับเข้ามาสนับสนุนให้เกิดการปรับตัว หลอมรวม คนที่มีความแตกต่างให้สามารถขยับสถานะทางสังคมและทำให้แนวคิดสนับสนุนความแตกต่างทางสังคมและวัฒนธรรมครองอำนาจนำ (hegemony) ในสังคม
